As symfony workshop is an interactive training session during which you will learn how to develop high-quality web applications fast and efficiently with symfony. After three days of symfony immersion, guided by experts sharing their knowledge and experience, you will know enough techniques and methodology to become fluent in agile web development with symfony.

For Novices to advanced Beginners

This workshop is for you if:

You haven't had the chance to try using symfony yet
You started playing with symfony but you can't figure out how the code you copy/paste is doing magic
You need help to troubleshoot problems
You want to get the big picture of all the pieces working together

Even if you think you are competent with symfony but want to learn good practices and get a better understanding of the mechanics of the framework, you should attend this workshop.

Knowledge of object-oriented programming concepts, relational databases, and PHP are prerequisites to get the most out of your training. A first experience of building a dynamic web application is recommended. Knowledge of PHP5, web design patterns, and agile programming techniques are a plus, but not required.

If you've already built at least one full-featured symfony application and you feel proficient or expert with PHP5 and symfony but still want to know more, send us an email so that we see how many people would be interested in an advanced symfony workshop.

Learn how to Develop a Web Application in a fast and effective Way

The workshop will teach you some very pragmatic skills:

Bootstrapping an application and installing the symfony framework
Finding your way across the symfony directory structure
Building efficient user interfaces in minutes with templates and helpers
Interacting with the user request and session
Connecting business objects and database tables
Turning URLs into information for the user
Using code generation tools to scaffold a module or build an administration
Tweaking your applications and environments with the configuration system
Internationalizing an application and allow for localized data
Contracting a code insurance with unit and functional tests
Debugging your scripts and quickly troubleshooting errors
Maintaining and optimizing your applications

The workshop is not centred on the askeet tutorial; instead, it uses many simple exercises with step-by-step instructions. By achieving a lot of short term successes, you will get confidence with the framework and learn to apply it in your own way.

You won't learn much theory at the beginning, but your understanding of the big picture will progress gradually. At the end of the workshop, and without noticing it, you will know enough about the Model-View-Controller separation and all the patterns used in symfony to convince your colleagues you speak a new language.

Not only will you become proficient with symfony programming, you will also apply the principles of rapid application development extensively. Don't Repeat Yourself” will change your life. You will understand every step of a web project, from design to deployment, including rapid prototyping, continuous integration, and much more.

However, our training sessions are designed to accept a maximum of 10 participants.

Bring your Laptop

The symfony workshop is not a conference, and you can't sleep at the back of the room. On the contrary, you should bring your laptop, because the workshop is very interactive and you will learn more by participating. As you will experiment with the symfony syntax and complete the exercises, you will accumulate more and more material to take with you. The code snippets and applications you will program during the workshop will be a great reference for you in the future.

By putting in practice the things you learn, you will probably make mistakes, but you will be very glad to find the pitfalls while an expert is close by.

Required configuration

Your laptop must have these applications installed and configured to run properly:

Apache 2.x with mod_php5 and mod_rewrite enabled
PHP 5.2.4 minimum, with mysql and sqlite PDO modules enabled
MySQL 5.x

Whatever the Operating System you run, you must have root/administrator privileges.

Also, please avoid reinstalling or upgrading your OS the day before the training ;-)
